Medifast is a low calorie, medical weight loss plan designed to allow significant weight loss of between 2-5 pounds per week.
The Medifast diet program has been clinically proven safe and effective by the physicians at John Hopkins University School of Medicine.
The Diet
The Medifast weight loss diet consists of 5 Medifast meals per day plus one 'Lean and Green' meal...which is 5-7 ounces of lean meat along with 1-2 cups of green vegetables.
These 6 meals provide between 800 and 1000 calories per day. This creates a moderate caloric deficit that results in significant weight loss.
There are over 50 meals to choose from including shakes, drinks, soups, bars, oatmeal and snacks.
The meals should be spaced 2-3 hours apart to provide maximum eating satisfaction and sustained nutrition throughout the day.
The Medifast meals offer a 'no counting' approach to dieting since they are formulated with the right balance nutrients.
This makes the plan exceptionally simple to follow and nutritionally balanced.
Exercise
Low to moderate intensity exercise is encouraged, walking is considered a low intensity exercise. The program calls for gradually increasing duration and intensity of exercise.
Special Considerations
Those with diabetes should check their blood glucose every 2 or 3 hours while beginning the Medifast program. If glucose begins to crash, you may need to reduce your oral diabetes medications. Consult with your doctor prior to beginning the program.
Rapid weight loss in females can result in increased fertility. If you become pregnant, you must discontinue the Medifast program.
If you have a serious medical condition, you need to check with your doctor prior to beginning the Medifast program.
A lactose free line of products is available for those with lactose intolerance.
Potential Side Effects
Side effects are rare, but may include: constipation, fatigue, feeling cold, dry skin or hair.
These side effects may also occur with similar products such as Optifast.
