Preventing weight gain

A large group of women where studied to determine the effectiveness of weight control practices. Only one combination of methods prevented weight gain: decreasing food quantity, decreasing fats and sugars, use of a commercial weight loss program and exercise. All other methods and method combinations failed to prevent weight gain. Abstract

Pedometer step recommendations predict childhood obesity

The number of steps taken per day, as measured by a pedometer, is significantly correlated with the rate of obesity, waist circumference and BMI in children. The number of steps also predicted the degree of obesity. Abstract

Blueberry extract lowers blood glucose

Diabetics receiving a blueberry extract experienced lower blood glucose levels, lower CRP and lower liver enzymes. The reduction in blood glucose brought their fasting levels into the normal range. The improvement in CRP and liver enzyemes suggests an anti-inflammatory affect. Abstract

Eating patterns and obestity

Twins were studied to find dietary factors associated with obesity. Obesity was associated with restrictive eating, frequent snacks, late evening eating, avoiding fat and failure to maintain healthy eating patterns. A restrictive/overeating eating style was the most powerful influence on obesity. Abstract

Fiber associated with lower BMI

Eating more fiber helps you to lose weight by slowing gastric emptying, improving insulin sensitivity and providing satiety. Fiber is negatively associated with BMI, meaning the more you eat...the lower your BMI. The same study found a positive associating between both dietary glycemic index and glycemic load and BMI.
