A meta analysis was performed on 61 separate studies showing preferential loss of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) relative to subcutaneous abdominal fat (SAT). Factors examined included percentage weight loss, caloric restriction, exercise, BMI, follow-up time, gender and baseline VAT/SAT.
