Resistance training produces significant physiological improvements in elderly subjects, even in the absence of weight loss, in as little as 12 weeks.
Decreases in waist circumference and visceral fat were noted, along with corresponding increase in HDL cholesterol and decreases in triglycerides and HbA(1c).

For weight loss, it does''nt seem to matter how you induce a caloric deficit, whether through diet or exercise. Inducing a caloric deficit in either way resulted in similar improvements in body weight, fat mass, insulin sensitivity and visceral fat volume.
Still, both diet and exercise are important for other reasons ...

The number of steps taken per day, as measured by a pedometer, is significantly correlated with the rate of obesity, waist circumference and BMI in children.

Runners were given either a high glycemic or a low glycemic meal 3 hours prior to running. When the runners received the low glycemic meal they experienced better endurance and greater fat oxidation rates.
