Catch up fat phenotype

January 9th, 2007 | by David Spelts |

Quickly and easily regaining lost fat is known as “catch-up fat” or a thrifty metabolism. This is associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and characterized by high insulin levels.

Mechanisms involved include suppressed thermogenesis, de novo lipogenesis (conversion of carbohydrates to fats), along with insulin and leptin resistance. Exercise reverses these metabolic processes.
